While mailing lists becomes a play ground to execute Goebbelsian tactics, I feel i need to scribble the reason & step by step incidents in our campaign in National Conference on Free Software.
Q:Why You are Opposing Novell?
You all are aware of the 2 major campaigns in which Free Software community in India fought Last 1.5 Years. The Campaign for Document Freedom and Ongoing Campaign against software patents. Novell was always opposite to the Free Software Movement’s position
After the evil agreement with Microsoft Corporation (MS), Novell betrayed the Free Software community by violating the spirit of the GNU General Public license, which is the corner stone of the Free Software movement and legitimising the patent threats of Microsoft corporation.
The deal also legitimized Microsoft’s doubtful and undisclosed patent claims. This stigmatised every other distribution as open to lawsuit and disruption. Novell continues to advertise this.
Novell’s deal with Microsoft has many noteworthy impacts. To list several principal ones:
- If Novell and Microsoft get their way, then metaphorically speaking, GNU/Linux will increasingly be pressured into a corner of the datacentre, essentially being marketed as a guest machine (running under Windows), as opposed to a host running with or without Windows virtualised. The virtual machine can be exploited as a sort of ‘gateway’, much like OEM bundling or even interference with boot sequences.
- Microsoft formats and protocols, some of which are encumbered by software patents, receive priority, precedence, prevalence and promotion at Novell.
- Microsoft creates revenue streams at the expense of those who build, maintain, support and distribute Free software. This not only deters developers but it also makes Free software a less appealing choice, based on cost. It impedes adoption of Microsoft’s number one competitor (according to Microsoft’s CEO).
- It divides GNU/Linux into two classes; on the one hand you have ‘legal’ GNU/Linux (only a perceived notion fueled by threats of lawsuits) and ‘illegal’ GNU/Linux, which is “not licensed”. This raises tensions and it is not healthy to the ecosystem which is supposed to thrive in sharing of code. This week’s announcement of a predatory strategy against Red Hat is a timely example of that.
To name detriments that have occurred in the two years since that agreement, Novell lost the community’s trust and their market share arguably fell relative to competitors that did not make a similar deal.
Here are a few key detriments that affected Novell’s competitors (there are many more):
- Patent allegations came from Microsoft in the middle of May 2007. At times, these allegations were explicitly backed by the deal that had been signed with Novell. This was not the first such incident and it was not the latest either (last one spotted a month ago).
- The deal with Novell may have led to a chain of at least 7 more patent deals that cover Linux and accompanying parts. Novell’s deal served as precedence for ‘marketing’ such deals, as myself as others anticipated from the very beginning. The harms of these newer deals are similar to the harms of the deal with Novell, which was by far the most comprehensive (involving the most strategic collaboration and having the most negative impact).
- As noted above, exclusion came from hypervisors, particularly in Hyper-V, using patent-protected hypercalls.
- In a gruesome display of manipulation and misconduct, Microsoft managed to force OOXML through ISO’s gates. Novell helped this happen in a variety of well-documented ways. This type of help was part of the deal — the binding contract Novell had signed.
- Concessions from regulators, who are being ’sold’ the story that Microsoft collaborates with GNU/Linux (but only Novell’s).
- The deal enabled Microsoft to ’sell’ the impression that it intended to do well with the Free software community and thereby enter Linux and FOSS conferences as early as the deal was signed, sheltered by Novell’s presence or implicit invitation.
- Novell is developing the GNU/Linux version of Microsoft’s proprietary web Technology called silverlight. The ‘covenant’ under which Novell has been granted this exclusive access also specifies conditions that are incompatible with the licensing that covers most other free software. As examples, it specifically requires that the software must have been “obtained directly from Novell or through an Intermediate Recipient” and that it must be “not licensed under GPLv3 or a Similar License”. free software proponents Groklaw have called the covenant “radioactive” and “worthless”, although Novell, Inc. is enthusiastic.
Our Campaign is just a Continuation of Campaign for Document Freedom and Campaign for Open standards in general and Ongoing Campaign against software patents . The posting mela on FSF-Friends & FSF-Bangalore only shows some of them does not have enough exposure in Free Software. At least they must understand Novell- Microsoft partnership hazardous to free software community compared to Indo-US nuclear deal to India
Boycott Novell campaign in CUSAT : The Process
While we came to know about Novell’s role in Software as a Platinum sponsor, we were too sad because it was not communicated earlier /through event website & we all are working for the success of Conference (I am a programme committee member, Swathanthra Malayalam Computing is a supporting Organisation, Shyam, me and Hiran were speakers , We all are planning to conduct a Free Software Film festival inside conference). On that night we (Hiran Venugopalan, Unni, Shyam Narayanan, VK Adarsh, Me ) Planned how to raise this issue without affecting the Conference. The major reason for our concern was the newbies in the conference. Novell is the Only GNU/linux company name mentioned in the Conference. since it is organised with the silent support of CPIM (You can understand it simply by going through schedule) a lot of people from Employee Unions, Students Unions, teachers Unions etc were participated in the event. Our intention is to protect these people being misguided by Novell. Novell was mainly promoting their fork of OpenOffice 3.0 (after they implemented notorious OOXML support & forked it after OOO3 moved to to LGPLv3)& SUSE in their stall. Most of the participants in the Conference were newbies and Novell is the only GNU/Linux distro widely promoted in the exhibition. Our protest is not targeted at Organizers or Novell. It was just a way to spread awareness on Novell’s evil trends through the posters to protect new users being misguided.
Thats why we prepared the charge sheet. We communicated the idea to few friends like Sameer Thahir from Ilug cochin on same night itself and communicated the idea. and he offered full support. We considered it as a Corrective measure taken by the free software Community towards the proper success of a Free Software community event.
On second day morning we reached early (by 8.30 )in Computer centre and prepared charge sheet. Unni created some wonderful posters, with the help of hiran. Arky joined us in the lab and also given some more poster inputs (A Chameleon changing to Windows logo colors) . And Jefry & me printed and photostat to A3 from TD Junction.
The Campaign.
We started posting at the Big Flex which displays programme list (also features Novell Logo, them Moved to Indian Coffee House, and posted some posters. Coloured the Logo “MICROVELL” and moved near Open Air Auditorium and posted Posters on Trees and some walls also in front of the state. (See Photos credit: Hiran Venugopalan)
Lot of people asked us about the campaign and we explained the reasons. All them were satisfied with our reply. Pramode sir, Renjith (IT public) , Jaisen(SMC), suresh, some more students from GEC Thrissur & MES (also volunteers of FSUG Thrissur/ SSUG Malappuram) etc joined with us. Vikram Vincent, who is sending abusive mails now also joined us while putting Poster in Front of the Open air State. (Removed as per the request of Vikram Vincent)
We posted another set of Posters on the gate of Kunjali Marakkar Campus. Out side the entrance of Exhibition there was a Banner of Novell. We posted the Microvell Poster and ‘Novell in Trash’ Poster along with the charge sheet on it without Blocking the content in the poster. Then Novell stall Owners came out asked us to remove the poster. I said If Organizers have issues in the content of the poster let them tell it publicly. And One person with Organizer badge (visible in video ) came and asked us to remove the poster. I said, this is just a protest against novell’s anti Free Software Practices. If You have issues, you remove it. And the organizers changed the Flex. See the video ( we never said we will post 10 posters if poster is removed . People like anil, Joseph Thomas and Haynes Davis are using the Goebbelsian tactics in mailing lists and blogs to make it as truth. But Luckily we had the video taken in Mobile. Thanks to Hiran). The Novell stall Owner visible in the video used the Checkmate response to the organizers. They will not pay if the poster is not removed
Then we posted charge sheet opposite to the wall of Novell’s stall. We never posted anything on their stall. It was removed just after we fixed it. But we didn’t raised any opposition. Some people from Focus Computers stall was arguing with hiran about the issues with Novell.
When moving to ILUG Cochin Stall, Hiran & Unni already reached there and distributing posters to MES Students. Most of them are well aware about Free Software . Manu & Friends were posting these posters on their stall. Jaisen, Unni & me moved to ILUG Cochin stall and put posters with the help of prinson. Then Dr.M.Bhasi came and pulled me from stall. I asked him to dont touch on body and communicate with Stall Owners. ILUG Cochin people said it is the campaign they are supporting. Then Dr. M Bhasi argued Organizers approval is needed for each posters on the stall and pulled me again. Shyam Hiran etc were distributing a poster saying “we support Boycott Novell Campaign” to Other stalls. Dr. Bhasi Threatened us saying he will through us out of the campus. and called security & police.
Me & Unni said we are ready to go out if you can point at least one critique to any one point in Charge sheet. Otherwise it will be the denial of freedom of expression of Free Software Activists.
I called - Anilkumar K V from OSS, One of the Organizer at that time and informed the situation asked him to Intervene. But He refused and said Dr. M. Bhasi (see Photo)will do the needed. Then I noticed a Team of SFI People from Cochin University Student Union under the leadership of Deepak from Cochin University Research Scholars Association(CURSA) also standing behind Dr. Bhasi and roaring at us. Since I studied on same campus and I am familiar with the dynamics of the campus violence by these people. So the better way is to move with the security people. Dr. Bhasi was continued shouting and one more person with him visible in this photo caught my Tshirt’s neck.
Then security people came and separated me from the team and manhandled. SFI people were behind security persons and trying to hit me by shouting who are you to protest in our programme. I got 2-3 hits on my back. People like Hiran & Unni were also treated badly in the crowd. Arky & some students from MES & GEC were taking photos.
Just after reaching back near Open Air Auditorium, people like arun, vimal, Hussain Master (rachana) and informed the incidents. Arun, Anilkumar from IT mission went to Kunjali Marakkar campus for discussion. By this time I got Updates from MES friends that Their posters were forcefully removed from stall and Videos and photos on their mobile phones are deleted.
UPDATE: Freedom of Expression cant be prevented using Muscle power
MES Students recovered forcefully deleted videos from their mobile phones. See the videos below
The first video. You can see i am in phone and asking anilkumar kv to intervene to solve the issue
Second video is without sound. buy you can see Deepak from CURSA leading SFI students
Rest is in Arun’s mail to FSF-Friends
I feel people destroyed the event is the Organisors like Mr. Bhasi from SMS, CUSAT, Deepak from CURSA, Anilkumar K V from OSS, who refused to act on a Crucial time. People who does not have enough exposure on Free Software Politics is made a small campaign as a Big issue through the denial of Freedom of Expression and Giving Weightage to Novell’s Concerns over Free Software Community Concerns.
UPDATE II:
- Mail From RMS
I recived a mail from RMS (Richard mathew Stallman) , the founder of Free Software movement. He says
First of all, congratulations on being the first free software activist
to be physically attacked for a peaceful protest.
This means our movement is gaining in stature ;-).
He also commented about our campaign strategy
me> Most of the participants in the Conference were newbies and Novell is
me> the only GNU/Linux distro widely promoted in the exhibition. Our
me> protest is not targeted at Organizers or Novell. It was just a way to
me> spread awareness on Novell’s evil trends through the posters to
me> prevent Novell’s misguiding new usersThat’s the right way to approach it.
- ILUG Cochin’s Event Report
ILUG Cochin Released an Event Report about the event. The event Report says
The series of events that happened was bad in terms of the organizers
taking an unnecessary tough stand on the matter and not lending an ear to
the actual facts. We were happy to raise our voice and protest with the
Free Software community opposing the likes of forces like Novell. Indeed
it was good to see a resistance in a programme of such magnitude like the
National Conference. Although there is no doubt to the fact that the
conference did its job, bringing people from all walks of life and ILUG
Cochin did the job telling people the principles behind it, the opposition
against Novell has also increased the significance and importance of the
event thereby bringing about a lot of questions into the community which
would not have been raised otherwise.
<snip>
Members from SMC were part of the Programme Committee and the Souvenir Committee. There were no indication that Novell was the platinum sponsor of this Free Software Event. The organisers never communicated about the sponsorship and thus betrayed the whole Free Software community as Novell did. This is evident from the incidents that occurred after the peaceful campaign to boycott Novell by the SMC members & other Free Software Supporters present at the meeting.
</snip>
<snip>
SMC takes this opportunity to deeply condemn the organisers decision to include Novell into the Free Software event. SMC urges the organisers of the event to aplogize to the community on this dreadful alliance with the notorious Novell Corporation and the way the organisers treated Free Software Campaigners.
</snip>
I am starting an FAQ to answer questions aimed at me in various mailing list. I will update this post by including new Questions and answers.
Q: Who Organised National Conference on Free Software what was your role in it?
A: National Conference on Free Software was Organised by Cochin University of Science and Technology(CUSAT), Appropriate Technology Promotion Council(ATPS), IT@School Project of Kerala Government, Open software Solutions and Industrial Cooperation (OSSIC). They also invited other groups supporting the Free Software cause such as KSSP, KSEB, Indian Linux User Group Cochin , Swathanthra Malayalam Computing(SMC) etc to be part of Various committees to support the Conference. I was included on programme committee representing Swathanthra Malayalam Computing(SMC). We made some suggestions like removal of Anand Parthasarathy from Meet the Personnel section (He is a pro-patent, pro-proprietary gadget reviewer well known in Free Software Circles as a person spreading Fear, Uncertainty & Doubt about Free Software) and suggested some rearrangements in schedule and including new people. Few of them were accepted but changing of people like Anand was not possible due to pressure from some organizers who does not have much exposure in free software.
Q. what are your activities in National Free Software Conference? Why you didn’t Organised protest in First day
A: We were invited as speakers and resource persons to conference and too busy with a lot of stuff. We were too busy on First day with Localisation Track on Computer center, Localisation of swathanthra Software session in Photonics department, meeting friends in the sidelines. Anil already aware that we were completed speaker registration by 7.30 PM . We were noticing Novell’s platinum sponsorship banners in Open air stage during evening plenary & sitaram Yechuries Speech.
Q. Are you a member of FSF India. The event website’s speaker list lists you as a member of FSF India
Q: It is without my Knowledge. After jayakumar pointed it in the sidelines of the conference , I communicated with joby . In my presentation, He introduced me as a member of SMC and Movingrepublic

I support just issue but can’t stand lies. Do provide proof when making accusations.
Since some changes have been made in the blog let me clarify — provide links to mails where I have been abusive in the least.
1. i can clearly see from the video that the person is aking them to protest elsewhere but these protestors are adamant on being here and also the video taken, clearly all well planned adn wanting to gain mileage out of it.
2. As Aniwar telling that they were busy on 1st day, i think protesting against something wrong, if they fell it is, then they should have left other works and started the protested if he/they were really interested in free software movemtn at large.(i hope he/they werent planning for the second days protests)
Finally Anivar’s version of the incidents also appeared. It does not differ much from that of other witness on the spot, except his denial on the reported outburst that 10 posters will be posted for each one removed.
For the sake of further analysis, let me consider Anivar’s version alone.
He agrees that they have prepared the posters at CUSAT computer center. There was no opposition from any of the organisers.
He agrees that they have posted it on the flex showing program chart. No body from organisers questioned them.
He agrees that they have posted the posters at various places where conferences takes place. The organisers does not denied their right to protest.
He agrees that they have posted the poster on Novell’s flex out side the entrance of the exhibition stall and Novell guy asked them to remove it. Upon the complaint from the Novell, the organisers are forced to prevent the protesters from such activities.
The remaining thing happened is as per the dynamics of a quarrel between two groups. If individuals involved in the quarrel reacts with emotions the tense will be more.
If Anivar is having any regard for the freedom he cherish and preaches with respect to software, he should not have pasted the posters on the Novell’s property.
Regarding his personal accusation against me, let me make one thing clear. Even though, myself and Anivar can work together on a common minimum program of promoting software freedom, I did not subscribe to any thoughts that led Anivar to deny freedom of other agencies.

violating basic human rights of protesters. I am sure anivar will

We posted the Microvell Poster and ‘Novell in Trash’ Poster along with the charge sheet on it without Blocking the content in the poster.
That we can see in the video. Don’t you feel shame for lying again and again?
Also you people pasted the posters in the walls of the exhibition hall. You could have pasted them in the space allotted for you. Did you put any stalls in the exhibition?
Did you see the 77th post in ‘arky’s’ blog? Comments are coming against India.
Please think again that who gained with your/your gorups acts?
Guru What is this man… take a chill pill. In 1st the audio is not clear to see if he was really talking to anil kumar. and 2nd video the audio is only not there and video is not clear as well except that some of the guys were offended by Anivar’s action.
But all said and done the videos are only bits and pieces which might be taken as both ways. But Knowing Anivar for his stunts. i dont blame organisers for getting agitated but i really condemn manhandling incident with the same words as i m condeming Anivars Actions..
The organisers of the conference have in no way antogonised the protesters. Protest is now part of the conference as somebody pointed out. The organisers have no claim that they are all pure users of free software. Vast majority of the participants may be users of MS products. The arrogant attack of the free software spokspersons and protesters might only be humiliating for those among them who still use MS. Whatever it be, the message of protest is very well made with all the hue and cry. That part is well done.
Anivar is now blaming Anil for not coming to his rescue. He is happy that Arun has come to his rescue and argued with the organisers for and on behalf of Anivar. Arun was not having any work to be done in this venue except participating in the conference. But Anil was having many thing to be done and hence could not have got time to reach there. How can Anil be a culprit only because of his absence on the spot of commotion. Any way Anivar got the help of the IT Mission director, Mr Arun. This help may be a reward for the support he has given to FSF and Arun in the campaign against the very National Conference on Free Software, 2008 for having it called the 2nd. Now it is clear. But Anil doesnot seems to owe any such thing to any body.
Anivars opposition seems to be not against Novell but against the Conference itself. Had it been against Novell, it could have been peacefully conducted in the conference venue, without creating a scene compelling intervention of security staff. It seems that the entry into the exhibition hall was only to create this scene and was pre planned, because there was no chance for such a scene any where in the conference venue.
As for the allegation that Novell was brought in through back door, the fact is that it was proposed and accepted as platinum sponsor only on the 14th evening. Their name appears only on the backdrop of the conference/seminar venues and in the book detailing program schedule. No where else. Had it been there, it would have appeared on the site. Site couldnot be updated after 13th November.

Rescue? . this word is not apt here. I called anil only for preventing this from being an issue affecting the conference.
>:He is happy that Arun has come to his rescue and argued
> with the organisers for and on behalf of Anivar.I repeat there is nothing to rescue here. That word is apt if Organizers locked me somewhere. As they already done to Amarnath Raja sir.

I just want to follow up the comments!
cheers
Now the difference is narrowed down to few points.
1. Organisers didnot allow democratic means of protests by their act of sending the protesters out of the exhibition venue. Anivar’s own narration admits that there was no obstruction for democratic protests any where in the conference venue. The problem occured when the protesters entered the exhibition venue and posted posters on the space allotted to others.
Here Anivar shall, my request is in all its sincerety, admit his rash and undemocratic attitude and correct it atleast in future. What has happened is happened.
2. There is no claim on the part of organisers that they were all pure free software users. OSS ICS is the only organisation that is dedicated to free software among the organisers. ATPS though use free software and working for free software promotion, is working on other areas as well. OSS is the only organisation it supports in software/IT field. IT@School, initially started using MS platforms is, to me, still in the process of migration. CUSAT, as best known to Anivar than me, is still using MS vastly in their desktops and even in systems. Naturally, the exhibitors also were of the same level in so far as their migration to linux.
The conference is necessitated by the above fact. Otherwise, if all were using free software, we wouldnot have come together for a free software meet of this type. Under such a circumstance, free software meet would have been something for free software activists alone.
Now I could understand the opposition the free software community was raising against this conference, calling it the 2nd to Hyderabad, FSF(I) only supporting the Hyderabad event, not even supporting this event in CUSAT, generating campaign against this, creating hurdles in fund mobilisation etc. Anivar, please understand that it is not a conference like those you free software activists were doing in the past. This series of conference is meant to mobilise the non-free platform users to migrate to free software. I dont think you will oppose the migration of any body to free software. I hope it is your objective too. Then why the you were raising doubts, criticism and allegations against the organisers. Are we not to use the word free software ?
So, I am earnestly requesting you to reconcile your opposition to the conference for having it called the 2nd to Hyderabad and for having it organised in this manner, with all the deficiencies, with all the inaccuracies, with all the contradictions and with all the weaknesses which have crept in it, not deliberate but due to inevitable ignorance when compared with a puritan free software technology session.
3. Now coming to your opposition against the NOVELL, the organisers have nothing against the protesters so long as it restricts itself to democratic norms.
Organisers donot have a claim that NOVELL is a protector of software freedom. The sponsorship was agreed on strict terms, they will give 2 lakh rupees in return for putting up their logo in the backdrop, their representative will be given a 5 minutes slot in the inaugural session, they in turn will talk only in respect of their service on free software platforms and the like. We wanted the funds very badly since our fund raising drive was obstructed by many factors, major among them includes the objection raised by the FSF(I) against the naming of the conference and the consequent campaign yourself and your friends made against the conference and the hurdles the FSF(I) is still creating as per their decision (official or un official) to participate in the conference while campaigning among the free software activists not to participate. Naturally, such campaign has badly affested our fund raising drives.
To conclude, the money that is given by NOVELL is for the purpose of the facilities which NOVELL was given inside the conference and not for any future tie-up. We have approached many others for funds including the sponsors of FSF, which didnot come through and hence this situation.
The points raised by the protesters are well taken and appreciated in sofar as the assessment on NOVELL is concered without agreeing to the undemocratic side of the protest within the exhibition hall.4. Regarding the role of FSF(I) director board members Arun and company, my position is that he was an invitee and not an organiser and hence may not be busy as Anil is. I didnot mean to dictate his role.
5. Regarding Arun’s role is that of rescruing you in a crisis or helping or expressing solidarity is a question of assessment, which different individuals may have different opinion. I used it with my understanding of the situation in which you called Anil and you were agitated over his inaction.
Hope this will help to clarify the position.
Joseph Thomas
Freedom is not a favour we receive. It is our right. CUSAT “allowing” expression of freedom is ridiculous!
“Freedom” itself is protest against “unfreedom”. It is a frontal attack on unfreedom. Free software movement is a protest movement! That is the way it should be.
Unfreedom should be opposed. Emotionally charged protests against unfreedom is nowhere inferior to any other forms of protest. When one invests one’s self for anything there will be emotion.
The vandalism unleashed by the undeserving “Doctors” of CUSAT only reminds the Bush Administration’s doctored version of freedom. Bush Administrationwas fighting for the hegemony of oil companies he was representing. Bhasi and his allies were representing NOVELL!
Forcing unfreedom in the guise of freedom is a rogue activity. Protest against such a rogue sabotage is ethical response to it. Freedom is not allotted to any one! It has to be grabbed. Why to lament on comments coming against India! A patriotic Bullshit!
Unfreedom whether comes through backdoor or front door those who defend freedom have to stop it. Freedom and unfreedom cannot co-exist.
Someone was writing about conspiracy. Conspiracy did not come from protesters. It is very much there. Micronovell IS a conspiracy.
In a world of unfreedom, fight against it cannot be other than “rash,” “impolite,” and “democratic” ( what is democracy for Mr.Joseph Thomas?). Nothing unfortunate happened. Something that deserves protest is protested. The protest should continue. Indeed it should gain more force and vigour.
Have RMS a say on this issue. That should bring some wisdom to the doctor and his allies like Joseph! The reconciliation Joseph describes reminds me of Stalin-Hitler reconciliation pack! Poor win-winners!
Dr.P.Madhu
Apt response, Dr Madhu. GPL for these corporates are back-door entry keys - which they conveniently use it to propagate their hidden agendas. These corporates think that having a GPL or a FS service with them is a license to silence all the defenders of freedom. Enough of this drama. Lets expose them to the fullest. They can’t use such ideologies to forment trouble here and think of getting away.
People are worried about the protest against Software Patents(Basically threat raised by software patents). Worries are not about the idea, but against the way it happened(or shaped into). For some, it is an undemocratic way of protest. Since i am not quite good at the distinction between being democratic and undemocratic, i am not commenting on that part(Everyone feels stopping parliament session in the middle of discussions as democratic!).
Everybody agrees on the fact that patents are something which we should be worried about. Since CUSAT is a research university, they will have a good idea about the scenario(at least people who does research there and produces something). If they are conducting good enough research in Computer Science, they will understand how bad is the situation in India(or say good for people who simply want to make some field their own). As far as i know, CPI(M) was one of the few people(if not the only) who were ready to support the Community’s interest in parliament in the software patent issue. So, it is a well known fact to all(or at least organizers), how software patents become a threat. I saw in the schedule two sessions on patent related issues. So no one is unaware of the facts.
The conference was conducted to educate a large section of academia and public(i am much sure about this) about the opportunities of Free Software and importance of Freedom. Most of the people are new to the philosophy or unaware of the philosophy. If the aim was just to make them start using GNU/Linux instead of M$, much better means were there. A big conference of this margin for educating all about the Philosophy of the Freedom and it includes the fight against patents. So in any circumstances getting Novell as a Platinum sponsor was a bad decision on policy(there can be a thousand justifications and am happy with that, just saying it is pretty bad on face of the conference on freedom being used to promote Novell).
I have been to a Project meeting some days before where the issue of copyrighting, licensing and Patenting were discussed. I was shocked to know that, government advised us it is better to do defensive patenting for all the IP generated. The chance of corporates obtaining patents for these technology before you publish it anywhere is too high. I was also amazed on the fact that, comparatively if you have enough time and money to spend, it is easier to get a patent than a paper in any international journal(at least in software’s case). Both time and money is less with Academia, so corporates win a lot in this race. Microsoft is conducting a research project contest, where winners were given huge sum of money and even jobs. Only thing they take along with is the IP.
Situation is becoming much alarming that, before start thinking about implementing some standard XML structure we have to check whether someone obtained a similar patent(XML is much popular now a days with data storage mechanisms for big corpora or data exchange headers for update systems etc.,for many cases you can reuse the same schema, since you will be storing the same information, you will ultimately end up having no other choice but to reuse, result is a patent threat). Situation is not at all promising. It leaves us no choice but to patent, though we don’t want to spent our precious money and time on the process. Just go through hundreds of patents by Microsoft, Google and all have in India. You will find many trivial ones, which ultimately makes some fields monopoly of patent holder. If people say, its their business strategy, i don’t feel it as an acceptable one.
Then about getting sued, i recently read an account of someone getting sued for installing and enabling a particular ‘Blogger’ feature on his server. It appears like, patent was sold royalty per copy and he didn’t pay it since he downloaded directly from web. Think of a situation when, you are being sued for using the XML schema which came with yum/apt-get. You might be thinking I am joking on. But when i browsed through the IP claims by M$, one was about meta data exchange system for for software updating mechanisms. It was based on XML and they specifically claimed for some tags too. I didn’t have the time to read through whole 20-30 pages came along with it. But i strongly feel that, it can put yum/apt-get under patent threat(in a country where software patents are not legal). Anybody can think of, how many trivial tags are there in case of a software updating system. If they claimed patent for trivial ones, all will be under infringement. They didn’t produce any intellectual property there. Just reused the trivial information available on a new technology.
The situation is this bad. I know only a few people who devotes a lot of time to fight against this. One of them is Anivar. He is trying to compile list of most dangerous patent claims(trivial ones, which makes the fields monopoly of someone). He is also in the forefront of the people who work to get a post grant review of patents. He is someone surely understands the threat of patents and someone who can’t accept the fact of Novell promoting freedom(or understands they can never promote freedom).
If you think from your senses, a protest thought overnight and arranged in the very morning can not be the best. But, i believe he tried to make it the best. It was much better to make a Conference thought about and planned for months free from “Patent Threat”(innovations were possible even in organization of events, next time let us try that, can take the Obama’s money generation techniques as a sample, i thought Keralites were best known for the “പല തുള്ളി പെരുവെള്ളം” style). Already we are in a low side, it is high time to understand what are we doing.
This is the newspaper report of NFSC Kochi 2008 on mangalm (17 November 2008)
http://jeffreyantony.wordpress.com/2008/11/21/mangalam-newspaper-report-on-nfsc-2008/
Since lots of things are taken for granted let me analyze jinsbond007’s urge for moderated democratic protests. (I do not target JINSBOND- I target the logical fallacies here
“People are worried”- which people?
Democracy and “stopping of the parliament” are two different things. Parliaments are never stopped. Though it appears as if some things are stopped. Parliament is an instrument to legitimize certain designs of those who have them. Parliamentary and presidential democracies could hardly stop anything! World wars, Microsofts, Monsontos, FIIs, nuclear deals, Gulf wars, War against terrorism,… every worldwide evils came through such “democratic” institutions. Democracy has been emerged into a body that could silence differences. Never before such an instrument silencing consents were possible. The ‘democratic systems’ are instruments of bio-power. Worries about “stopping the parliament”. Parliaments are never stopped! Just look at the way Nuclear deal is passed! All that was required is to take into confidence one person- The UPA chairperson! Things were cake walk! There was just a drama of protest- staged before our eyes!
“CUSAT is a research university”- What is research? Agreed that a lot of scientistic dramaturgy is staged there. Science is inherently revolutionary. It breaks down our biases. It questions every epistemologies. Science if progresses unconstrained it frees. Rituals of science does not do it! Which “scientist” was performing the Goonda role there? It was” Dr.” Bhasi. What was his science? Supply chain management? There are a lot scientistic. There is no science! Show me one scientific endeavour worth of its name undertaken by Bhasi and his colleagues! They are just being part of scientistic rituals. They do nothing better than a poojari in a local temple. These poojaris of scientism have no sense of science. They are anti-science. No institutions go against the spirit of democracy than those appear to be dedicated for democracy. Similarly, humans are not so much anti-scientific as the professors and students of “research institutes”. The foolish rituals carried on in the “research” institutes does not make them scientific! Dr.Bhasis’s department may not be ready to take the challenge of scrutinizing their scientific endeavour!
If they really do research they will become compassionate. That was not the feeling the CURSA could generate!
It is well and good that CPM stands for software freedom. That does not mean that they hold the final wisdom of freedom. It is fallacious to argue that CPM is the party that takes voice of the freedom so that we should surrender our sense of freedom to what ever they hold. If they are for freedom they will be irrespective of any one’s protest against their stand. If their stand depends on our docile yielding then their integrity should be questionable! Are they doing a favour?
“So, no one is unaware of the fact”- What a statement! This is how we slip into things. All that is necessary to be aware is to add few titles in a schedule! All that is democratic is to have a parliament and its smooth functioning! All that science requires is some researchers and professors practicing some scintistic rituals! Come on!
There lies the problem! There are some educators- Know alls. They took the heroic responsibility of “educating” the academia and public! It was not a “democratic” platform of equals! In their mission to “educate” they fail to learn. “Free software” argument was nothing more than an “opportunity” for the parties concerned. There lies the problem. You cannot educate without practicing, dear. How can somebody claim to educate masses on freedom! Who is sitting on that zenith! Look at the don-Quixote here! I am reminded of Marx’s humour on the Quixotes.
Bringing Novell is not just a bad policy decision of know-alls. It was not a helpless decision as they were in need of money. The fundamental problem is they wanted to “educate” something of which they had no clue! That is the pathetic condition of the research institutions and political parties. Where is research? Where is science? Where is freedom? Where is democracy? –
I appreciate your later paragraphs and your concerns. What you have written in earlier paragraphs is not a logical sequence of your concerns. I appreciate your honesty. Yet, I have to expose the emptiness of democracy, education, research…. Etc.
I think either the CURSA, Dr.B, Joseph, party men… etc., learn from the incident of protest or they still engage in empty posing of funding compulsions, democratic etiquettes, …. If they learn, something good happened. They get some glimpses of freedom. Or else they remain hypocrites as ever. The ball is in their court. Let us see whether the researchers, professors, parliamentarians have something to learn. If they do not learn, then there can be no use of these decaying lumps of flesh.
Not just an awareness of palathulli peru vellam is sufficient. “Orukudam paalinu oru thulli visham” should also be remembered.
I appreciate the last sentence. It is high time to understand what are we doing.

The deliberate attempt to create untoward incident in free software national conference CUSAT is said to be out of fear on the part of FSFI secretary Sri. Arun M, of CUSAT being developed as a centre of FOSS and his losing the clout and importance of being the free software messaiah in Kerala.
The FSFI, the SPACE and ITMission run on their consultancy couldnot even ensure the use of free software in the very IT department or office systems in the Govt of Kerala. Even the mail sent from the International Conference office run by them in doc format has invited criticism of chairman of FSFI himself.
FSFI is Consultant to Govt of Kerala through SPACE abd Arun. FSFI secretary has been indulging in activities of international importance, utilising the resources of the Govt. Urgent need for the migration of systems worked on proprietary platforms in various departments in the Govt, including the secretariat and Chief Ministers office is not addressed. Local empowerment and HR building is the critical factor identified by the very IT department for accomplishing the task.Govt is made to spend on international events and intitutions in the name of technology absorption and thus their inability is covered up. FSFI & SPACE together with IT Mission conducted an international conference last year by mobilising funds from Govt organisations. Sri. M Arun was aware of the declaration in the Hyderabad conference that the next national conference will be held in Kerala. Yet he mobilised the entire Govt Departments for an international conference a second time, this year too, being held on 9th to 11th December at Trivandrum. Yet he is spreading the canard that the national conference is being held to hurt the international conference being organised by him.
International Centre For Foss is being established.
Why all International ?
To cover up the inability of all the concerned.
The talk in the corridoor of secretariat is that this is meant for opening an avenue for Sri. Aruns’ appointment as IT advisor to the Govt of one of the participating country in the international conference.
Any way, Govt and the people are the sufferers.
It was not anivar and his friends but Novell is the culprit that deliberately conspired to sabotage the conference.
Novell is aware that it is not welcome at free software forums world over as it was found conspiring with Microsoft against the philosophy of freedom.
Then why did Novell wanted to sponsor?
It wanted to illegitimately occupy a space. It was easy for Novell to infiltrate because the organizers at CUSAT were obviously idiots. They were idiots and naive.
When anivar and friends were protesting against such infiltration the idiotic professors and his dumb followers and further stupid politicians all feed each other with their foolery and idiocy had no clue of the infiltration barked at the wrong tree! All that these buffoons know was manhandling and other lousy reactions! They were crying against somebody violating democratic etiquette. So much is their poverty.
A few should have by now understood that it was Novell and not Anivar who was playing a nasty game.
Novell was bringing its ideology of slavery in a conference dedicated for freedom.CPM should learn a lesson.
It is not easy to hijack the free-software movement as it could get away with its other hijacks hither too.
If they want to support free software, they need to be sincere in their support.
Free software activists are not naive. They are not gullible. There is something truly revolutionary in their approach. CPM is not accustomed to such a truthfulness. There is real strength in their philosophy. It is well founded. Their commitment to freedom is incomparably genuine than partymen’s commitment to marxian understandings. That genuineness is every where in the world. The movement is not yet spoilt as the communist movement. The movement has not become a mafia gang as political parties are.
CPM persons should reinvent their lost genuine spirit. They cannot survive among genuine humans with their tricks and tactics. They cannot continue to be politricking. They have to become really political to accommodate free-software philosophy.Give up the attempts to malaise the genuine boys and girls of FSF. recognize the true villain. In this incident Novell was the villain. Its supporters were ignorant, idiotic and arrogant. That is the truth.
i think we want to start fight against .
removing these also ??
http://www.fsf.org/donate/patron/logos/L_Novell_R.png/view
http://www.fsf.org/donate/patron/logos/then also boycott novell will have meaning ?
I was imagining what would be the status of a party which has sensible uncompromising people as its constituents. What is the need for a party when everyone is sensible enough - the younger ones even more sensible ! The party would slowly wane away into oblivion. It would be a suicidal theme if they place compromising-party [trying to project compromisers as practical or pragmatist] before uncompromising constituents [even if they raise the bogey of fundamentalists or extremists, against them].
Times have changed. Interfaces to knowledge have changed. The environment to acquire them has also changed. The motivating factors have changed. The accelerating force to gain momentum would be a “commitment to unchangeable principles”. If the party really wants to test this hypothesis, it should provide internet access to all people from dalit and marginalised sections - then we can see how things shape up. [Thoppe therikkum saRee, oru kaLiyum eLuppam nadakkilla]
Just watch when the new generation emerges out of the schools, in a couple of more years. Did anyone think that this was just another simple replacement ? Trickery would be possible with the generation present in CBSE/ICSE etc, not with the Education department’s baby which is emerging. Take care. Bye.
I see an attempt to single out attack me. I dont want to get into mudslinging. Just some clarifications,
1. FSF India’s decisions are not my personal decisions.
2. I am not a super human to convert entire state to free software.
3. I dont not have any control over KSITM or IT Department to ensure that it is migrated to free software. I can only suggest.
4. I was not the only person who showed solidarity with issues raised, Mr Amarnath Raja (IEEE), Mr K S Anil Kumar (Head E-Governance KSITM), Dr Sasikumar (FSF India), Mr Renjith(Barton Hill Engg College), Mr Pramode CE (Free software hacker), Mr Senthil (FSUG Banglore) and many others.
5. Senthil offered to put boycott novell posters in their stall, however organisers objected to that.
6. Most of the FSF India board members participated in this conference as speaker or even as active organiser. We are the first few names in the speaker list.
7. How did I try to obstruct this conference ? Please substantiate your allegations.
8. I am not aware of any deceleration in Hydrabad which said next convention will be held in Kerala. Even if I know that how does it matter ?
I found a copy of deceleration here:
http://ellisys.blogspot.com/2007/02/national-convention-on-free-software.html
9. Free software is a truly international movement
Just to add to above points. Efforts to distort philosophy of free software has been happening in Kerala for quite some time. While we can agree and disagree on our vision and approach to free software, what is free software is something which has been clearly defined by philosopher and activist like RMS. I have been vocal about misrepresenting of free software by some organisations and individuals for their personal gains. I think it is my responsibility to do so.
http://mm.gnu.org.in/pipermail/fsf-friends/2003-January/000595.html
http://mm.gnu.org.in/pipermail/fsf-friends/2003-January/000621.htmlLike Anivar was forced out of CUSAT, long back (around 2001-02), I was forced to keep silent during a meeting organised by BSNL workers union on free software. The speaker who was talking abt free software was giving wrong picture of free software. They gave me a slot to say what was wrong in the version given by the speaker. Then again original speaker continued with his own distorted version of free software philosophy.
I am appalled at the deliberate attempt by Sri Joseph Thomas to mislead the public. He states that the conference in Hyderabad was not organised by FSF India when the website of Swecha in its page on the conference had put FSF India’s name first among the list of organisers. The names of Swecha and University of Hyderabad came only later. Sri Joseph Thomas should verify the facts before writing them in public spaces.
No body is singling out Sri. Arun M. What is told is that Sri. Arun M who is a public servant has been instrumental and active participant in a show of arrogance to the organisers of the event in CUSAT, which again is a public organisation.
It seems the reference to past discussions software freedom and open source and the difference of opinion between Arun and OSS is brought to establish that Sri. Arun is being opposed by OSS ICS. But we have not told or done any thing of the sort to any body so far. But now we are forced to talk of your style of functioning and the damage it causes to the Kerala society.
Before that let me clarify one point. Has any of us from OSS or ATPS came to a conference hosted or organised by you and made a controversy or have we ever insisted that you should do in such and such a manner as you and Anivar is doing?
Our concept of freedom may be different from that of yours.
The Ernakulam incident which Arun refers is the best example for the arrogance of Sri. Arun. It was a meeting organised by BSNL employees. While somebody was speaking, arun interrupted and started talking, right ?
Is it the way to express or assert one’s freedom. I remember Sri. Anivar also doing the same thing or worse in a Trichur meet. And the same is repeated in CUSAT too. This act of going to a conference and creating trouble for the organisers (Thanks for reminding me of your past case also) is a habit that is still persistant in Sri. Arun and Sri Anivar. This is the way they assert the right to free dom ?Now coming to the opposition Sri. Arun is having with OSS is its business model. Yes, OSS has been servicing its clients on payment. Sri. Arun started challenging the OSS to publish the OSS products on the Web. OSS would have done it had OSS been able to assign somebody for doing it. We couldnot spare the required man power for that work. OSS is unable to attend to the call being received on Sangamithra which is put on site. OSS has not been supported by any body, except its clients. No Governmental support. No social support.
Now we find that the reason for the Governmental support not forthcoming for OSS was due to the influence of Sri. Arun in the Govt.
We are too wide apart in atleast two of our concepts.
1. Local empowerment is not the agenda for Sri. Arun and FSFI. It is ample clear from the last two years activities done at Trivandrum involving FSFI, SPACE & ITMission. What one hears from there is International Conferences, International Centre for FOSS (Remember, Sri. Arun is against uttering the word open source, and funny part of it is that the RMS also is not opposed to Arun’s ICFOSS.) and now yet another round of International conference this year. Will you please explain to the world who are the beneficiaries of these international conferences ?
To our opinion, what is required in Kerala is local empowerment. Empowerment of our PSUs and SMEs and nursing of new ventures in Free software service support. But that aspect is simply ignored by the IT Department on the consultancy given by FSFI and the SPACE and the international outfits. It seems the final outcome is that the govt departments and undertakings are forced to turn to MNCs for its support. Yes, the KSEB is said to have been assured by Sri. Arun that he will get the support for PostgreSQL from the original PostgreSQL development team from abroad, organised during the coming International Conference. (Please bear with me, this is a hearsay). The objective of International conference is very clear with this example.
2. The second issue we dont subscribe to Sri. Arun is on the business model. What we believed and still believe is that our business model of serving the clients for a cost is the correct one in the present system. According to Sri. Arun the FSFI and SPACE is not doing any business but is serving the Govt voluntarily.
Sri. Arun is having access to the IT Mission and Department. Can you please publish the accounts on
(a) How much money has been spent by the Govt of Kerala and its undertakings on SPACE and FSFI till date ?
(b) How much money has been paid by the Govt of Kerala to OSS by way of cost of software ?
(C) What is the total amount spent by the govt on purchase of free software ?
(d) How much amount has been spent by the Govt for free software promotion and on what heads and accounts ?
Now coming back to the role of obstructing the organisers of the conference in CUSAT, was it not Sri. Arun the paid employee of ITMission a public servant who sat in dharna in front of the Main auditorium in support of Anivar just before the meeting about to be addressed by the CM. Was it not an obstruction or a show of arrogance quite unbecoming of a public servant. Had there been any issue between Anivar or his friends and the organisers, was it the way to behave ?
I was wondering who this Joseph Thomas is! I felt something personal in his vengeance and his argument favouring freedom of novell! I even could feel the hypocrisy in his regret for the manhandling of anivar. This post a little bit reveals him.
I always wonder at the hypocrisy and smart twisted minds of majority of Keralites.
Joseph seems to me one such shrewd mallu!
Please talk business if you want to talk it.— But not at the cost of freedom, and philosophy of freedom. Why this mask joseph. You are repulsive. Keep your venom private.
I was reading this statement of Joseph Thomas with wonder!
He writes, “was it not Sri. Arun the paid employee of ITMission a public servant who sat in dharna in front of the Main auditorium in support of Anivar just before the meeting about to be addressed by the CM”
He reminds that a “paid employee” having “no right” to sit near somebody who were protesting Novell’s intrusion!
He reminds that such a protest is something deserving great punishment as the “meeting about to be addressed by the CM”… A few weeks before I could watch in TV the very CM was sitting in dharna at new delhi!
His statement “obstructing the organisers of the conference in CUSAT”
All these words reveals him. He seems to be a status quaist, wearing the mask of freedom temporarily for temporary financial gains!
Joseph’s is the voice of slavery, personal vengeance, etiquettes, etc.Hope we can read between lines.
I do not know this fellow. But his hypocrisy is quite visible. His shrewdness is distasteful.
Google Inc confirms that a majority in the world have preferred our version of the developments of “Kochi Conference” or “National Conference of Free Software Kochi” - for the searching public. Thanks to our activists behind this work.
Next time if these people come with a similar mission, we will reverse-hijack “Marx” from them - that would signal its intellectual death. The emerging world prefers common sense - not silly, stupid or absurd arguments.
Let Sri. Arun reply for the questions.
I am not having any vengeance to any body.
But Arun M has been creating such problem in the past also. This is the second instance. First in the BSNL meeting at Ernakulam years back, as reminded by Arun himself. Why one should go and create problem to the organisers in the name of freedom. One who participate, on invitation or otherwise, shall understand the difficulties of the organisers and respect their rights first. Freedom activists shall first respect the freedom for every body to express their views. Views can be countered with counter views in ones turn and not by creating trouble for the smooth conduct of the conference. You may be right and I may be wrong. But you dont have the right to dictate me to repeat what you say.
Please bear with me, friends.
Arun has been repeating such arrogance, this the second time.
Here in the Kochi conference, he declared support for Anivar who created a problem in the name of freedom.
Those who infringe upon others freedom doesnot know the very meaning of freedom.
The question raised by the protesters was a question of violation of norms of software freedom. In the name of educating the violation of NOVELL’s misdeeds, how can one attack the freedom of the organisers to ensure the protection to the exhibitor ? May be their allegation is that it is not NOVELL who is responsible for their presence, but it is the organisers who are responsible. Even in such a case, can the anti-democratic and violent protest tresspassing into the paid exhibition stalls and defacing the boards of NOVELL be justified ?
There is nothing wrong in bringing out the wrong deeds of the organisers. But the action shall conform to democratic norms.Arun should not have supported the high handedness of Anivar and his friends and sat in protest in front of the meeting venue where CM was to address within a short time, in expressing solidarity with Anivar. Arun, being a public servant and the responsible person of FSFI, the sister concern recognised by FSF should have avoided it.
My allegation is that such an over enthusiasm from the part of Arun has occured due to his connivance with Anivar and the joint action both of them have been engaged in organising a malicious propaganda against the very CUSAT conference even before the conference, even before taking the sponsorship of NOVELL, in the name of calling it the 2nd one to Hyderabad.
Any amount of abuse on me will not make Arun clear of this undemocratic attitude. Any body is welcome to abuse me for having these things said.
How will Arun feel, if some one comes and create this sort of protest demonstration where the International conference is being organised by him. Will he express solidarity with it ? Will he stand with the protesters when the venue managers push the protesters out.
Mr. Joseph Thomas,
This will be my last post here. I understand that the venue of Free Software is used by a few for personal feud. Your concern for Novell’s freedom is misplaced. What novell did is a sabotage. What the cusat people did is stupid. It seems you were cashing out of this incident by joining with the ignorant cusat people, who by now could have understood their grievous mistake. Novell is not arguing against their mis-treatment, CUSAT people are silent. Then why you are so much vocal for Novell? It appears CPM also is not supporting the Novell mess.I do not think such a sponsoring will be preferred in Kerala in future. As far as such a realization happening, the protest my Aniver and his friends really brought some fruitful awareness.
I have not seen any serious allegation by you against aniver by you as it appears something to do with your attitude towards them seen together.
Your target seems to be Mr.Arun. I do not know both of you. But I regret your personal feud pushed you to such an extent to extend your olive branch to the enemy of your hate character. Enemy of your enemy temporarily became your friend.
But, your presentation of your attitude was deceptive. You were talking about the freedom of novell. I do not think that was your real concern. Even if it were microsoft your attitude would have been the same- as you see only your enemy. That makes you myopic.
I do not know Arun. Neither I support him. But you were inviting comments by your provocative stand- which was insincere. Further, this should not have been selected as your place to fight your personal enemy what ever could have been the injustice committed against you. I desire he does not answer here. Such an answering and your counter accusations would make free software movement a laughing stock. That is very bad. Free Software Movement is not something to do with your personal feuds- especially that has nothing to do with its philosophy.
As you have some other motive your idea of freedom has to be neglected. Yet, for the sake of students who visit this place I would like to comment on the notion of freedom you invoke.
“Freedom” is not a private property. There is no your freedom and my freedom. Freedom is not a thing possessed. Freedom is a common field. It is an ecology. It is openness. It is resistance to dominance. It is being authentically human.
I have written about freedom here in detail: http://www.scribd.com/doc/6332438/Madhusuicide-as-Unfreedom-and-Vice-Versa
There is no such thing as Novell’s freedom! There is no such thing as Aniver’s freedom! All that matters is whether there is freedom, openness, resistance and authenticity! Freedom can be violated. Microsoft violates freedom. Novell violates freedom. That is it. There is no novell’s freedom.
It is absurd to say freedom is all about views and counter views and the patient listening of such views ….
Freedom is freedom beyond what-so-ever our views are!
In a world of unfreedom, only unfreedom will be peacefully continuing.
Now genetic codes and lives are owned by corporates. Do you think it is their freedom to own them? Do you think they can be peacefully questioned? Che was fighting. Was he peacefully working for smooth conduct? what is that smoothly conducted? If it is unfreedom it has to be questioned. No body should be free to impose unfreedom. When somebody imposes unfreedom that process should not be let to be conducted smoothly. Mostly unfreedom is imposed in the most smooth way. That smoothness is deceptive. Glib talks and lovely imposition of unfreedom is called imposing unfreedom using bio-power. Bio-power operates through glib-talks attractive advertisements, sponsoring, social work, Aids prevention etc. Look at coco cola. Their campaign for clean water for poor is such a bio-power. democratic etiquettes will hardly helpful to take on them. These etiquites are our state of subjugation. That is the violence on our authenticity. That is silencing our critical capability. That is the unfreedom penetrated to the core of our bone marrows.
The respect to CM or PM and who so ever has no meaning. Are you convent educated?
The job one holds, its norms… etc. are bullshit.
They do not appeal. They are not related to the idea of freedom as you portray them as if they were the test stones! They are something different.
What is your problem with aniver’s protest? If Arun has something to do with you in some other deal that is entirely different story. Bringing them here is meaning less. There is something hidden in your attitude towards aniver. I do not want to know that. But your opposition does not seem as plain as towards aniver not following norms of freedom! What you hide is not that much hidden. Why do you instruct what arun should do or not do? Who are you to do that? If he does something inappropriate his higher officials would manage him. What is your problem?
CUSAT is not God! (Even God should not be beyond criticism!) Cusat is not beyond criticism. One has to be critical of the institutions- especially public institutions. They use public money. They have to be centers of excellence. When they are not they should be criticized. I do not think your love for CUSAT lets you to write as it is your malaise against your personal enemies.
I do not know you. I do not know Arun. My aim is not abusing you. I feel bad about your personal vengeance hijacking the purpose of a good movement. Why should myself or others abuse you? All that I am worried is that your personal vengeance aids unfreedom!
Bye
Dr.P.Madhu
I wanted to stop. One more word.
I happened to read this one:
http://mm.gnu.org.in/pipermail/fsf-friends/2003-January/000595.html
http://mm.gnu.org.in/pipermail/fsf-friends/2003-January/000621.html
RMS words are repeated to justify some business deal and its refusal.
Such a word game often goes against the spirit. We have witnessed with all the declines of movements: marxism, buddhism, christianity, islam…
When decline starts the followers of movements take the words of its leaders literally and go against its spirit.
Such an action is done because one compulsively force oneself into an ideology whose spirit one does not understand. It also happens when one pretends as if one’s action is in compliance with a philosophy.
Such pretension and uncritical followership is dangerous and degenerative.
Movements should constantly be in vigil from such a degeneration.
Compassion and irreducible responsibility should come before ideology.
Lush ever green Forests when they are in decline there exists some symptoms…. some species of monkeys appear… Understandings when become ideologies they are such monkeys. They indicate degeneration.
I was very much hopeful of the FSF.
Is it degenerating?
A second thought!
My point is very plain.
1. I am not arguing for NOVELL’s freedom.
2. I am arguing for the freedom of the organisers and the responsibility on the part of the organisers to protect the contract with NOVELL while accepting the sponsorship.
3. I am pointing out the anti-democratic attitude crept in the actions of Anivar, may be due to the over enthusiasm. But for the untoward incident happened inside the exhibition hall and pasting of “BOYCOTT NOVEL” posters on the posters of others, the protest is well within the norms and justified. I too could have argued for Anivar.
4. I have never argued that NOVELL is correct or NOVELL is justified in any of their action. In fact I had no previous occassion to assess NOVELL. From what I could gather now, I too dont support NOVELL. Hereafter, I too wont agree to bring NOVELL as a sponsor.
5. What I am pointing out is a pre-planned attack on the organisers of CUSAT national conference on software freedom triggered by FSFI, supported and taken up by Anivar and friends.
6. Campaign against the naming of the conference as 2nd to Hyderabad, initiated by Sri. M Arun of FSFI, claiming that the Hyderabad conference was organised by FSFI.
7. Anivar took it up and that campaign reached a stage where Anivar was disassociating with the program committee.
8. That was some how averted by the organising committee by not insisting on the name to satisfy the critics. Organising committee thought it fit to avoid a division on such issue as the name, fact remaining what it is.
9. Then came, the question of funds. Even on 14th, the organising committee didnot get firm offer for the required funds. NOVELL’s proposal was brought somewhere around the 1st week of November and couldnot be processed or finalised till 14th. Same was the case with almost all the other sponsors like, CDiT, ITMission etc. Their sponsorships also were put up on the site only on 12th and 13th. CDiT, ITMission etc were not insisting on any conditions like calling Platinum or Gold. Here the proposal itself was like Platinum sponsor etc. Out of compulsion on 14th evening, the organisers agreed to the sponsorship of NOVELL and the stage backdrop was prepared accordingly and NOVELL’s representative was included in the inaugural session. This is the reason why NOVELL’s sponsorship did not appear in the site. There was no effort on the part of organisers to keep it secret fron any body.
10. The organisers have send proposal to almost all the Free Software Business groups for sponsorships. But none came forward, may be due to the campaign undertaken by FSFI against this conference, I presume.
11. Nobody from FSF thought that this conference would be a success to this extend.
12. Sri. Sasikumar has turned down the invitation as a speaker saying that he got a pre-planned program at Palghat. But he too was seen in the conference, thanks to him.
12. Thanks to Sri. Nagarjun, chairman of FSFI who readily agreed for blessing this event not only by his speach we requested for but also offering a workshop. I am sorry, that we couldnot meet his full expenditure due to shortage of funds. Thanks to him.
13. To me, Sri. Arun was inclined to claim the credit for every free software activity or event in India. He feels that free software activity shall take place only under the FSFI. This seems to be the notion of Anivar and group also with the addition of SMC to the FSFI.
14. We in Kochi, OSS ICS LTD & ATPS, have never been a part of FSFI. Some of us were co-operating with the SMC initiatives for Malayalam localisation.
15. Sri. Arun M, himself created hurdles for releasing the funds from IT Mission, which is quite unbecoming of a public servant who has to be impartial.
14. The free software promotional activities of Kerala State IT Mission during the past have been limited to promoting SPACE and on its counselling planning and holding International Events and international institutions at Trivandrum, while what is needed to be addressed was local empowerment.
15. Sri Arun on behalf of FSFI and Sri. Anivar has been engaging themselves in a crusade against CPI(M). Sri. Arun was not so open as Anivar. This is revealed in the case of the campaign against :
The chennai conference organised by those in chennai, may be supporters of CPI(M).
This is the reason why I asked Sri. Arun reply to my questions on his activities. I hope I am justified in asking these questions here since Sri. Arun responded here in this site.
If you are not tolerant, I too stop my comments on this site
Gd bi.
And look Madhu as to what triggered the episode. A mere suspicion - somebody behind some propaganda - are these party supporters more vulnerable than religious supporters - to get emotionally carried away just because some monkey faces are shown at them. Is this the mandate given by people to be adhered to in these 5 years ? When poor people are suffering like hell, a few are enjoying the thrill - like participating in some weird adventure - is it healthy for a democracy ? FS movements have been vehemently criticised by monopolists, abused by some, its supporters taken to court, but did this movement or its supporters get carried away ? These incidents have only made them more resolute, more responsive and more focussed. Anivar and his team has contributed a lot that makes Free Software enjoyable by a majority of the poor people of our state - more than what any government had done for the discipline - they deserve extreme commendation - and look what we all are offering in return - humiliation and disrespect. Is this the way our civilisation has to grow - do we allow our future generations also to follow the path that we chose to ? We should immediately give up all our personal differences aside when we discuss common issues. If young blood want to hit and enjoy, hit someone amongst us and take pleasure. I promise, neither Madhu nor I would hit back. Lets move on.
The issue of software freedom or freedom of knowledge is only one of the very many contradictions and conflicts that exist in a capitalist society. The root cause of this conflict is the capitalist system as such as IPR can be seen as only another form of private ownership in a world where digital commodities are produced and sold (This premise can be debated if needed). Having said so what is now required on the part of the Free Software Movement is the extending out to all forms of struggles in the society. For this it has to reach out to various sections of the society and not get confined to free software enthusiasts alone. The major contribution of the National Conference 2008 was that it could reach out to various sections of the society with the theme of free knowledge and free software. The organisers can come out with details of the participation from various cross sections of the society if possible on the website. FSF is now seeing things in a narrow perpective and hence its activists are getting over excited about trivial happenings like Novell putting up a stall in the exhibition. I fear that the agenda and activity domain of FSF has become so narrow that the actions by the activists are taking the form of intolerance as well. Also just look at the statement of RMS saying that Anvar is the first person in the world to be mishandled for having undertaken a free software cause. RMS may be communicated that the person who posts this has been mishandled by students way back in 1998 when he was undertaking a project study in favour of free software. This was before the FSFI chapter started operation in India. Thre is a report submitted to Ernakulam District Administration that FS should be the technology in e-governance for panchayath computerisation. This oversight too is because of the narrow mindedness in agenda and programme.
Free software movement can become a peoples movement only if it integrates itself with movements (even those movements which are taking place in the corporate world and hence I feel Novell or any such corporate also has a role to play).
FSF may please understand that the free software movement is not about yourself. It is a broader peoples movement (started in India even before FSFI chapter was inaugurated)
FSF may please understand that if it does not extend out to other movements and conferences of similar kind and creatively take part in these with perseverance and tolerance, it will be confined to history in quick time (at least in India) however big the personalities involved are.
At least now there is a philosophical response. I am happy for that.
Seeing the discussion becoming too much personal (mr.joseph vs. mr.arun) I wanted to get out of the discussion.
Now there is some theoretical discussion. I think I should engage with this one.
Let me introduce myself:
I am an independent person. I do not belong to any movement. I do not belong to any party. However, I think about freedom. My thinking is neither Marxist nor capitalist. I do not think that there is only a Marxist vs capitalist argument exist in the world. There are immense possibility of thinking. I borrow ideas from every thoughts I feel relevant. If there is no tolerance towards such position debate may not be possible- is obstructs listening.
About the world we are living in:
I do not think we are living in the same world as that of the Marx. The nature of “products” and “services” are not same as that of the past. To be more elaborate we live in a world where a product once produced can be sold many times. Hence, it is not the thing that is visible but something else is sold. Things that are abstract and non-material is sold. “Selling” got redefined. Often we are not sold, we are licensed to use. The same product can be purchased by innumerable number of people at the same time- this does not put so much pressure on the producer. That is, the new economy is not a “scarcity economics” so that the ‘laws’ of supply and demand do not function as it was in the economy of scarcity. The nature of “property” got changed. Property is not just a piece of land or a machine alone, but it is something ‘immaterial’. It is intelligence. Intelligence is “less separable from its producer” as it was the case with the manual labour. Intelligence is a continuity of intelligent person more “non-alienable” than the other forms of “labour”. “owing” the labour by a price given to the time spent by the “intelligent” “software worker” or a “gene-worker” is not any way similar to owing a labour of a tailor. In the former case the owner owns too much. He owns a piece of intelligence!- which can be owned again and again. It can be sold or licensed again and again. Owing such a product does not mean owing an isolated product of labour, rather owing a cog in the wheel- an inevitable piece of information which is part of a stream of information and their future constructions. That is the owner can make too much of a claim for anything that uses this information. The labourer is too much constrained- “alienated” than before. He/She will not have the freedom to continue with his stream of thoughts once it is sold. The owner “licences” where as the worker “sells”. The worker sells at a point of time of his/her employment the “owner” sells for a longer period of time he/she licences/sells it where ever that intelligence- or code is used! The “use value” of the new labour is immense. It can be sold/licenced with no additional marginal cost for a longer period of time! The changes made by the labour is immense. (imagine the kind of difference a genetical code can make!) Ingredients used in making a final product if not transparent the possibility of “intelligence theft” is immense. Hence, the source code if kept secret, there can be theft. The thieves can steal anything that is available in the public domain and covert them private. Labour as a commodity does not remain same as it was in the case of classical political economy. Impacts are immense- too risky. Non-transparent private ownership of software and genetical codes may take away freedom from the human species forever! The new situation demands new definitions of freedom.
There should be some agreement/ disagreement on the above said aspects before we proceed. It should be understood that my stand is not FSF stand. It should be recognized that I am not proposing a full fledged theory nor speaking from an established theoretical position. Since, the thinking are new if there is any set back in the arguments put, it should be seen as my personal failure and not the failure of any one arguing ideas similar to mine. As I have not yet come to any conclusion in my thinking I will be changing my position rather than committing to my earlier arguments in the due course. I am ready to take a debate with the already institutionalized positions you have taken.
Since we are taking one to one argument both you and me should be having the right to choose selective ideas of the partners and friends who may join with us. Both of us will not be bound by the arguments put by our friends. That is to avoid confusions and side tracks.
We should agree not to abuse each other. However, we are free to point out logical fallacies.
Please join with me in agreeing and disagreeing with my stands above. Then we will have a coherent debate about other things- like “contradictions & conflicts exist in a capitalist society”- Let us not assume the words like contradiction, conflict capitalist society and others are taken for granted. Both of us should be responsible in explaining as clearly as possible at the convenience of the listener the terms used. However, we are free to change our position by clearly spelling the change in the due course of argument.
You can also set the rule of the debate and alter some I have said.
Let us start.
Watching this video would prevent us from reinventing the wheel during the proposed debate:
